Worth a Thousand Words: Portraits in Soul Collection
The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center and Tina Turner Museum hosted the closing reception for the Portraits in Soul Photography on March 14th, 2019.
The Center exhibited the collection for two weeks in March. Stax Records was gracious to loan the pieces and a representative from the Stax Museum of American Soul Music spoke about the API photographers and musicians they captured.
Kimberly Cooper-Taylor, the representative, is the Director of Education at the Stax Museum. She gave a rundown on the history of Stax and spoke on the key players in the 1960’s Memphis music scene. The Portraits in Soul depicted many of those leaders. William Carrier Sr owned API Photography during that time. His son, William Carrier III, owns the company today.
