The 2018 Academy Awards
Last night the red carpet was rolled out for the 90th annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. The ceremony began with an old-timey black and white reel of host Jimmy Kimmel talking about different actors before he moved on to the gorgeously glittered stage to talk about more hot-button topics like the Time’s Up movement, Harvey Weinstein allegations, newfound representation of women and African Americans in Hollywood, immigration, and the wage differences between male and female actors, as in the case of Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Williams. Kimmel’s opening monologue continued with jokes directed at the Best Picture mixup from last year’s ceremony where La La Land was announced as the winner instead of Moonlight, the true winner. The ceremony was intermittent with clips from the last ninety years of Academy-celebrated movies, the trailers for Mary Poppins Returns and Roseanne premiered, and performances were given by Mary J. Blige, Gael García Bernal, Miguel, Natalia LaFourcade, Sufjan Stevens, Andra Day, Common, Keala Settle, and Eddie Vedder.
