Pick-Your-Own

Summer is almost in full swing! Children are going to be freed from school soon and you’re probably trying to think of really fun things to do with them. All you know is that you all need to get out of the house. If you are saving money by planning a stay-cation or just looking for something to do on the weekends, there are plenty of local opportunities to bond with your family as well as support your local farmers who grow great fruits and vegetables.

Pick-Your-Own is a great excuse to get out of the house on weekends—it teaches everyone about locally grown food and the benefits of fresh produce—as well as fostering respect for the Earth and the dedicated people who work it. PYO does not only bring you closer to your food, but it is also one of the greatest joy of life to stand in the sunshine eating fresh fruit and berries after you pick and wash them. It helps that the products you’ll pick will be the best you’ve ever had; nothing tastes better than sun-warmed fruit. The Pick-Your-Own community offers everything from apples in the fall to okra, tomatoes, and zucchini in the summer. Strawberries are available in late April through June, Blackberries, and blueberries in the summer months.

There’s no limit to what you can do with what you pick. Berries can be used in pies, jams, jellies, cakes, salsas, sauces, beverages, or even just eaten as a snack. Fruit can also be thrown into any of the above and tomatoes are great in salads, homemade pizzas, spaghetti, and with salt. Any way you eat it, it’s going to be delicious because locally grown food elevates any dish you make.

Don’t forget to wear sunscreen and enjoy the experience. Most Pick-Your-Own want you to bring your own containers to take your haul home. There may be an entry fee or the price will be based on weight.

Most farms have websites where you can check out what kind of produce is in season and they can also be found on Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s website: www.picktnproducts.org

BUT, a good rule of thumb with anything agriculture—call before you go to make certain nothing has changed. You never know when something unexpected may have happened to limit a crop.

Below are many of the Pick-Your-Own operations all located within the 21 counties of West Tennessee. If you’re looking for more information, please visit their websites or give them a call. If you are a pick your own, and we missed you, please give us a call at 901-840-4800 and we will add you to the online version of this article!

If you’re unable to make it out to the farm, the 2018 September/October issue has a list of farmer’s markets in West Tennessee, which will all be opening very soon.
